A truly special and nostalgic place — it feels like stepping back in time. The resident manager, Kalinga, and front-of-house Vish were exceptional: warm, attentive, and genuinely eager to make our stay memorable. The location is absolutely epic. Sunrise and sunset from the balcony were breathtaking, and the walk down to the waterfalls is well worth it. We did the trek at 7am each morning as well as in the evenings, and it was magical every time. The tea tour with Das was a real highlight. He was brilliant, sharing so much knowledge while walking us through the estate itself, followed by a fun tasting session and even some foraging of local herbs and flowers. Food was excellent throughout our stay. We chose the Sri Lankan menu both nights and thoroughly enjoyed it, and breakfast was just as lovely. While the property could benefit from a little tender loving care and maintenance, this did not detract from the experience at all — in fact, it only added to the charm and uniqueness of this memorable place. Highly recommended for anyone looking for something truly special and authentic.
We stayed here as 2 adults 2 kids (aged 10 and 12) for 3 nights as a place to acclimatise coming straight from the airport. We really loved our time here. Swimming in the waterfall was magical and we loved the tea plantation tour. A great place to relax, unwind, enjoy the views and all the sounds and connect with colonial history. Staff super friendly and helpful. The Sri Lankan breakfast was amazing.
We stayed at Ashburnham Estate for just one night in July 2025. We stayed as a family of four in the family room. We had a wonderful time and all agreed we wished we'd stayed longer. The place had a real old world charm. Some parts of the estate were a little tired by western standards but it was clean, tidy and the decor was very attractive. The service was impeccable, we felt really well looked after. We had a fabulous dinner, where our vegetarian and vegan family members were well catered for (discussed in advance). Breakfast was also gorgeous sitting out on the terrace. The setting is glorious, set amongst the estates’ 100 acres, 60 of which are traditionally managed tea hills. During our short stay our boys had a little swim in the pool which was fun, we all went on a tea tour with site manager Mr Dassanayake who was full of enthusiasm and knowledge, and I went on a trip down to the waterfall by myself (very steep and full of steps so not good if you have mobility issues). The whole place was so peaceful and serene it felt good for the soul. Highly recommended!
Gorgeous grand bungalow on a working tea estate. This boutique stay is a little out of Matale and so worth the drive. It has only 6 double/triple rooms, which are beautifully furnished. They offer bed and breakfast, with the breakfast of toast, jam, fruit and eggs is simple but does the job. You can purchase both lunch and dinner with a choice of set menu (some sri lankan but also European dishes). The acreage is just stunning, worth doing the tea tour as it was very interesting. There is also a waterfall on the property and a pool, however the days we stayed it was rather cool. The house is a little run down, but still beautiful and ALL the staff are just wonderful. A big shout out to the Manager, who helped me sort out some train ticket issues and coordinated a driver for us at the last minute. The hotel is very relaxing, lots of spots to sit and read or enjoy the board games and outdoor activities in much cooler weather. It provides beautiful views of the mountain ranges. We would not hesitate to stay again (just make sure your driver checks the Google maps location before coming, we got a lost).
Ashburnham Estate is everything you dream of when imagining a peaceful, boutique escape in Sri Lanka – and more. From the moment we arrived, we were struck by the breathtaking setting, nestled amidst rolling hills and lush tea plantations. It has a wonderfully intimate, homely feel, with just the right touch of rustic luxury. We stayed in the family room which was beautifully decorated and incredibly comfortable. The staff were outstanding – warm, friendly, and genuinely couldn’t do enough to make our stay special. The food was delicious – make sure you try the Sri Lankan curry, it was a highlight! We loved sipping drinks by the private waterfall – a magical experience we won’t forget. The tea plantation tour was both educational and fascinating, and added a lovely touch of local culture to our stay. Although we weren’t there for the pool, it’s worth noting that the pool area could benefit from a little maintenance – though this didn’t detract from the overall experience. Our only regret? We only stayed one night. We’d absolutely recommend staying at least two nights to truly soak in everything Ashburnham has to offer. A hidden gem – we can’t wait to return.
My daughter & I spent three delightful days at this unique hotel. Ashburnham offers a rare combination of attentive service combined with homely charm. Vish and the team could not have been more friendly, we look forward to visiting again.
Excellent!
Lovely place to spend a few nights, the private waterfall/plunge pool on the estate was wonderful, the staff were very helpful and friendly, sitting out on the verandah at sunset (or any time really) was just heavenly. The only negative for me was that meals were a bit pricey
Relaxing time at Ashburnham
We had always wanted to stay on a Tea Estate in the hills and this did not disappoint. A great tour of the estate was arranged either the Tea Estate Manager and was an excellent insight into how tea is grown and picked. Great views from the veranda. Staff most helpful.
This is a great place to recharge if you’ve been on the go for a while. It’s secluded and very quiet. I think there’s only 6 guest rooms so you’ll have all the peace you need. The rooms are probably a bit ….rustic, and conveniences like fridge, A/C, tea and coffee facilities aren’t provided. That said the staff are fantastic and will bend over backwards for you. Are special shout out to Vish. He goes above and beyond to please. Oh, and the food was exceptional.
